When I did my first tech internship my junior year, we were all given a choice between MacBooks or ThinkPads. It did everything just okay, and just okay was significantly better than killing off my calves. With LaTeX, Notepad++, Eclipse, Visual Studio for our OS course (don't ask), it was more than enough to carry me through two years more. By my sophomore year, I swapped out to a cheaper 13' laptop (still PC). (Yes, our freshman dorms were a mile away from our classes because of "reasons"). It took me about a month to realize that I wouldn't be doing enough gaming on that thing to justify lugging it up a hill to the engineering quad every day. I'm still a recent grad and I started off with a 17' monster laptop. Yes, it's a great, albeit expensive laptop.
